Weekly Update!

In math, we discussed word problems, which included addition and subtraction without renaming. The girls needed a few reminders to show their work using number bonds and number sentences. Also, we started working on addition where renaming is necessary. See below for examples of problems we discussed in class. We talked a lot about grouping numbers to create friendlier numbers, so they are easier to add mentally. A few of the girls are still relying on counting up. As you can imagine, this strategy does not work well with larger numbers! Please feel free to practice breaking up larger numbers with your daughter at home.

During writing time, we read the book A Dark, Dark Tale by Ruth Brown, and the girls started writing a spooky story. Once they have written the beginning of their own stories, they will be switching with a partner to continue another story. It should be fun reading the final products.

In social studies and science, we started a new unit on the James River. We will be reading a fun A to Z book as the girls take notes and draw pictures to go along with their writing. Our field trip to Maymont next week will be a great extension of this unit.
I am so excited to share that we will be participating in the Global Read Aloud program this year. This program connects classrooms all over the world as we read the same books. We will be doing an author study using Yuyi Morales' books, and we will be partnering with a class in Canada! I have already received a video that I will share with the girls next week. In response to the first book Dreamers, the girls will be videotaping a reflection using Flipgrid. More to come about this exciting opportunity.
See below to view the video reflections the girls created after we completed our oceans unit. The girls scanned a QR code to access their accounts in class. To view the videos at home, enter the code: 3b35d990 below and scroll down to see the girls' videos. Enjoy!

We topped off the week with a fun Innovation project. We read the books Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney and What Do You Do With An Idea by Kobi Yamada. Next, the girls came up with ideas for how they would make the world a better place. Click here to see their creations. They absolutely loved this project!
